Getting to Use the Big Screwdriver

Sometimes, when you buy a set of tools, as opposed to individual tools, there are going to be things in that set that you rarely use.  We all know this and accept this because the price of the set probably costs the same or less that the cost of the 3 or 4 tools we know we are going to use.  This is probably true of a set of anything; from tools to makeup shades (but more on that at the end of the blog).

Years ago (probably around 26 or 27) I bought a set of screwdrivers from Canadian Tire because either I or a friend got gas there and we were given a coupon (or coupons) for the set.  The price was a ridiculous amount and there were lots of screwdrivers in the set.  There were micro screwdrivers, Robertson (3 head sizes) –those square ones we like so much in Canada, Philips (at least two head sizes), slot, and even Torx.  They each came with 3 length sizes (for all the heads) and the slot screwdriver came with four.

Over the years, I have used them all, but the really long slot screwdriver just wasn’t needed.  The head was quite large and the length was far more than I ever needed.  It has sat in the bottom of the toolbox for all these years, except for when I was cleaning dust and debris from the box.  I just never found a chance to use it.

Today, as I was assembling my shopvac, I found the opportunity to use it.  Was it absolutely necessary?  Probably not, but the head was the appropriate size and the length was helpful as I was installing the wheels of the machine.   It was only after I was done that I remarked on how satisfying it was to finally use the tool.

Is there something lying around your house that you bought as part of a set that you still haven’t used?  What is it, and why haven’t you used it?

Last year while out west I forgot my laptop power cord. I had to go to Staples and by a universal set. There were lots of adapters that I never used. However this year Matt did use the set and a different Adapter.

This tends to happen with makeup brushes, when you buy them in a set. At least for me, there’s one or two brushes I never use. 🙂
