I am not sure how I managed it, but I got out of bed and on the bike in time to make the Eagles Saturday morning ride. My work week had been rather long and tiring and I really wanted nothing more than to sleep late into the morning.

However, I want to be more active and burn more calories–and just saying that doesn’t seem to be working very well. So I got up and out the door.

I am still riding with the C group with hopes and dreams of riding with the B group some shiny day in the future. The good thing is that the people in the C group (as well as the other groups) are friendly happy people.  They make the ride a fun experience.

I felt pretty good on the bike, except that my early exuberance couldn’t carry me through the hard middle part. I would be good on one climb and then awfully slow on another.  It was a tad frustrating, but proof that I need to exercise more.

At one point, while I was trying to swallow the messy remains of my cliff bar without adding more liquid to my mouth, I lost contact with the group. This didn’t worry me, but I knew the group leader would be worried so I cranked into the highest gear and raced down to meet them.  I hit about 58kms an hour on the descent.  I have to say that it felt pretty good.

The highlight of the ride was a trip through the Holland Marsh. The vegetables are growing and the smells were wonderful.  Luckily they eclipsed the horrible smell of the chicken farm we had passed a kilometre or so before.

We did have to stop and wait while one of the members had to change a flat. It was managed in a reasonable time and allowed me to take some pictures of the group.
