People You Meet

I met a fan of Notre Dame on the bus today.  I rarely talk to anyone on the bus, but today was special.  I also talked to a woman who moved from Vancouver to star her own marijuana business in Toronto, but that’s a whole other story unto itself.  Getting back to the fan of the Fighting Irish; Maybe it was the warm weather.  Maybe it was the fact that the sun was still shining despite the late hour.  Maybe he was just a friendly guy.

You see, I have this thing for Notre Dame.  I have never been there.  I don’t even know that much about the place.  I have only been watching the football team for a couple of years.  I know the hockey team has done well this year, but those games only rarely show up on sports channels here–probably when they have run out of poker and darts.

I shouldn’t use the word dream because that’s for the big stuff like getting a novel published or becoming a voice actor or escaping from teaching, but I don’t know what else to call it.  My dream, or fervent wish, is to go to Notre Dame and watch a football game.  I haven’t done a lot of research into this, but I know the tickets are expensive and having seen the crowds, the accommodations much be either hard to get or equally expensive.  Nonetheless, I would like it to happen once.

So, this fan I encountered has done all that.  He assured me that the university was amazing and that the people were so friendly.  He had high praise for the university.  He told me that I would have a great time.  He also gave me some tips on accommodation, getting tickets, and eating.

So now I feel like this goal is achievable.  I’d call that Today’s Perfect Moment.

About Anthony

I am: equal parts rebel, romantic and shockingly average Joe. a writer trapped inside of an ESL teacher's body. an introverted attention seeker. a teacher who hopes one day to be called "Captain, my Captain." an intellectual who can do some very dumb things. a person whose Japan experience, despite being so long ago, still exerts a strong influence upon him. a lover of books, music, beer, hockey and Pizza.

If you could pull off riding your bike through Vietnam, I’m 100% confident you’ll pull off this dream as well, Anthony!

It was a sign for you to book a trip to Notre Dame!

I can never understand the power of college sport and even the college system in USA. It goes without saying that I am a fan of Notre Dame. It is of course “Fighting Irish-Americans” rather than “Fighting Irish”. Irish-America has its own value system which they mistakenly think is Irish.
Anyway, I was in Dublin a couple of years ago and Notre Dame were playing Navy and it was weird seeing so many fans. There is a YouTube video of the Band (the band is amazing) going thru Dublin.
And I confess to watching YouTube “Fighting Irish” going into their stadium.
Id also love to be there once.
But I also have a commitment to Texas State University as I was invited to give a lecture there in 2013.
So Go Notre Dame…….and Go Bobcats also.
