IMG_20180220_154751048_HDRToronto has its fair share of uninteresting buildings.  I hesitate to say ugly, because beauty is in the eye of the beholder and whenever I show my students the ugliest building in Toronto, they disagree with me.  They also disagree on what I think is the coolest building in Toronto.

I came across this building when I was out with my friend the other day. We decided to walk down Bay street…because he had just come from a stressful meeting and felt that exercise was good for that.  I agreed because….not sure why really.  By the time I got home, I had racked up 23000 steps on my fitbit.

I admit that I know next to nothing about architecture and only became even mildly interested after I read Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead. When I saw this building I didn’t find it impressive.  In fact, I was a bit confused by it.  It was definitely modern and I didn’t find it ugly.  The thought that came to mind was “afterthought’ as in, those windows look more like an afterthought than a plan.  That is probably not true, but they just look kind of stuck there.

I welcome your thoughts as well as submissions for coolest or ugliest building in your area. Also, if you happen to be the architect for this building, I would love to hear how it came to be, and your thoughts on how it looks now.

  1. 23,000 steps is twice what I do on my longest days.

I just build them… as long as the bills are paid, I like them all…
