This blog is not very political. The causes it champions are all related to my personal happiness. However, sometimes, it needs to stretch beyond that.
Early this morning, I turned on the TV and I got to see a powerful sight. A student, Emma Gonzalez from the Majory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland was speaking at a rally.
She was brilliant. She made a fantastic plea; both logical and tinged with emotion. I encourage you to watch her speak.
When she explained how much money the NRA gave to the Trump campaign and how much that equates to the lives lost by gun violence this year (not even two months in) I was shocked. She was right to question how little we value someone’s life.
When she explained about Trump repealing the law that disqualified mentally ill people from owning guns, my skin crawled. I know Trump wanted to have some kind of victory over Obama–but obviously that wasn’t it. People aren’t wrong when they say the blood of those people is on his hands. They aren’t wrong.
I encourage you to repeat her words to every politician you know or have access to. None of them should accept money from the gun lobby. They should hang their heads in shame. Unfortunately this has happened before and soon the message is forgotten. I think you basically you have to use the Trump method against Trump and those who supported him. Stay on the message. Keep repeating it, even if you think they aren’t listening. Every time he says “No collusion.” Say “No guns.” San “No money from the NRA.” Say “No shirking your responsibility.”
I am in a different country, but I want to know what I can do. Is there someone I can write to? Is there someone who listen to a person in a different country? Seriously, please let me know any tiny piece of leverage I have and I will use it. Hopefully so will others. I so badly want this to be the last time I turn on the TV to hear that someone has gone on a shooting rampage. I so badly want this the last time I turn on the TV to see the death of children who no longer have the chance to make a better world.
