My Tom Petty Memory

I have never seen Tom Petty live. I can’t even say that I am familiar with the bulk of his work.  I do have one Tom Petty memory to share, though.  Thank you for indulging me.

Way back when Full Moon Fever came out, I was just starting university. I was away from home and only one of my friends was attending the same university.  As luck would have it, our other friends made the two hundred kilometre drive to come and see us.  We spent the weekend eating, showing off our university town, and drinking at home and at various university dive bars and pubs.  While most of the details are lost, I do remember that the soundtrack for that weekend was Tom Petty. Free Fallin’, I Won’t Back Down, and Runnin’ Down a Dream were played endlessly that weekend.  When we weren’t playing it, I heard it at the bar.  When we were stumbling home in the wee hours, I heard it from car radios.

Thank you Tom Petty. Rest in Peace.
