I go through a lot of phases or periods or …whatever. I like something, and I get really into it, then the thing fades to the background for a while, maybe a log while, maybe a short while. If you’ve read my hobby blog (check my profile for links) then you probably already know this. These phases include the idea, the research, the execution. The research part usually takes up the most time, energy, and money–driving from place to place to check things out in person.
Currently I am going through a cycling phase. I was planning on buying some books on bicycle maintenance and subscribing to a couple of magazines. You can see what I mean about research costing a lot of money. However, I took a different route. I went to the library and checked out several books on bicycle maintenance as well as a few magazines.
Walking out of the library I felt like a winner. I felt like I had just won the lottery. I got a chance to really preview the books without spending a dime. If I find them to be a great source of information, then I can buy them. Until then I have a chance do some of that coveted research for very little money (I was at the library to return some books anyway).
